Mek Mulung (2023)
The Enchanted Theatre of Kedah
Mek Mulung is a traditional Malay theatre form that originated in the northern state of Kedah, Malaysia, and is believed to be over 400 years old. This rare and culturally rich performance art uniquely fuses drama, singing, storytelling, and dance, often based on local myths, legends, and tales of ancient kingdoms. Performed in the Kedahan dialect, Mek Mulung distinguishes itself through its harmonious blend of Islamic, Hindu, Siamese, and indigenous Malay elements, reflecting the region’s rich cultural crossroads.
Each performance features a main character—usually a noble prince or princess—who embarks on a journey involving love, loyalty, magic, and morality. Accompanied by traditional instruments like the rebab (bowed lute), gendang (drum), and serunai (flute), the performance is both dramatic and spiritual, often incorporating ritual elements to invoke blessings or protection. The elaborate costumes and stylized movements, paired with hypnotic music, create a spellbinding atmosphere that draws audiences into a timeless world.
