Category 2 Centres Under The Auspices of UNESCO In Malaysia
Category 2 Institutes and Centres under the auspices of UNESCO are a global network of institutions of excellence in UNESCO’s domains of competence established by host country. Given their expertise, these institutes and centres contribute to implementing UNESCO’s strategic priorities, programmes, and global development agendas through international and regional cooperation, research, knowledge production, policy advice, and capacity development.
There are several Category 2 Centres in Malaysia:

1. The Regional Humid Tropics Hydrology and Water Resources Centre for South-East Asia and the Pacific (HTC-KL) (1999)
It was established based on the theme “Humid Tropics Hydrology and Water Management”, which was formulated under UNESCO’s Fifth Phase of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, also known as IHP-V.
Spanning over five years from 1996 to 2001, IHP-V set out to strengthen the bond between research, application, and education. HTC-KL operates under the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Malaysia. Through this regional centre, new technologies, best practices, and scientific information are exchanged to achieve the common goal of sustainable water management.

2. The International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC) (2008)
ISTIC acts as a platform for developing countries to share knowledge and resources related to science, technology, and innovation (STI).
ISTIC achieves this through various initiatives, including training programmes, workshops, and conferences focused on STI policy, STEM education, and technological entrepreneurship. Overall, ISTIC functions to promote sustainable development and collaboration among developing nations in STI.
