 “Progressing Together: MUCP Contributions to a Sustainable Future”


Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme (MUCP) Achievement Event that was held in Kuala Lumpur on 22 to 24 June 2023 has marked a decade of prestigious milestone that commemorates the celebration of cooperation stemming from strategic partnership between Malaysia and UNESCO. MUCP is proven to be a model of effective global leadership for international development cooperation. The three-day hybrid event was officiated by Mr. Mohd Daud Mohd Arif, Secretary-General of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU), who was representing Her Excellency Madam Fadhlina Sidek, the Minister of Education Malaysia and as the President of MNCU.

With the theme “Progressing Together: MUCP Contributions to a Sustainable Future”, the event has successfully gathered approximately 300 participants who have physically attended throughout the event. The programme also gauged an average of 1,300 daily online viewers from social platforms of Ministry of Education Malaysia. The event included dialogue and knowledge exchange in which participants had the chance to engage in panel sessions to explore innovative transversal solutions and address key challenges faced by the global south, Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) towards the betterment of the global community. By matchmaking the stakeholders and the younger generation, the event aimed to enable collaboration and create the opportunity to reflect and discuss the role of the MUCP in accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the post-COVID recovery.

The official launch of MUCP Coffee Table Book were among the highlights of the event. The book is a compilation of success stories of MUCP that recapitulate a decade of inter-disciplinary activities and serves as a reference for future generations. The introduction of SECCI (Social and Human Sciences, Education, Culture, and Communication and Information) for SDGs Scorecards tool, as well as MUCP website were part of the event’s highlight. Further, an interactive exhibition during the event has showcased the MUCP’s contributions that was translated into products and ideas to pave the way for future partnerships and initiatives.

MUCP has successfully gathered a diverse group of experts and stakeholders, including officials and policy makers from the Government of Malaysia and participating countries, UNESCO Offices, institutions and centres, regional and international experts, non-governmental organisations, youth organisations and students. Since the starts of MUCP in the year 2013, the Government of Malaysia has produced 36 significant projects and benefitted approximately 7,000 participants from 87 countries across Asia and the Pacific, LDCs, SIDS, and Africa. MUCP is a genuine testament of Malaysia’s commitment towards sustainable future in all the competencies of UNESCO namely Education, Natural and Social Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information.

The projects implemented by MUCP has covered various levels of need which includes supporting young artisans, devising appropriate water policies, practices, and education, ensuring disaster risk resilience to UNESCO designated sites and empowering girls and STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics) for education. In addition, the programme also addressed the challenges of climate change from the perspective of journalism, promoting inclusive social development as well as open sciences. By garnering pool of expertise and dedication, all MUCP partners have worked together on transversal competencies approach in order to create transversal solutions for sustainable future.

The successful strategic cooperation between Malaysia and UNESCO can be emulated by other countries towards global commitments to enhance social cohesion in building forward differently to accelerate the achievement of SDGs.
