UNESCO Heritage Programme – Historical City of Melaka

Celebrating the richness of the history of the Melaka Historical City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU)  organised the “Program Warisan UNESCO” (UNESCO Heritage Programme) held in Bandar Hilir, Melaka on February 16, 2024. The programme, conducted in collaboration with the Melaka State Government and the Melaka State Education Department, was attended by H.E Fadhlina Sidek, the Minister of Education and President of MNCU. Also present was YB Datuk Haji Zaidi bin Attan, the Deputy Exco for Tourism, Heritage, Arts, and Culture of Melaka State, as well as senior officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Education and the Melaka State Government. The programme was further enlivened by the involvement of teachers and students from around Melaka.

This programme was held to instil a sense of appreciation for Malaysia’s cultural and historical heritage recognised by UNESCO. In addition, the programme aims to integrate educational elements related to Melaka’s cultural heritage.

In her speech, the Minister of Education emphasised the significance of the participants’ presence and commitment and strongly suggested that all students in Melaka visit the UNESCO heritage site available in the city of Melaka.

The President of MNCU also called for the continued implementation of programmes related to the integration of education and appreciation of cultural heritage so that Malaysians can celebrate and respect the diversity and uniqueness of the multiracial cultures of Malaysia.

The highlights of the programme were cultural performances such as Dondang Sayang and Kebaya fashion show, and a heritage walk around the Melaka World Heritage Site with students and school teachers.
