World Oceans Day 2020: Beach Cleanup Programme

In conjunction with the celebration of World Oceans Day 2020, the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan -YPASM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water (Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Air – KASA), Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Professional and Continuing Education Center, Universiti Utara Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Branch (PACE UUM), Trash Hero Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Terengganu – MBKT), Dapo Pata and Manis FM has successfully organized a Beach Cleanup programme at Dapo Pata, Pantai Tok Jembal on 19 September 2020.

The programme was officiated by YB Hajah Zuraida Md Nor, Women’s Representative of the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly with the aim to raise awareness among the community, especially young people regarding the importance of ocean and the effects of plastic pollution to coastal areas and oceans. Throughout 40 minutes of the cleanup programme, a total of 542.45kg of garbage consisting of plastic, face masks, ghost nets and so on were successfully collected by the 250 participants.

Apart from that, a mural panel had also been installed in Uptown Kontena@Dapo Pata to commemorate the World Oceans Day 2020 as a way to reach the local community and visitors on the issues of safeguarding ocean.
