Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve (TCBR) is the second largest natural freshwater lake in Malaysia and the first in the country to received UNESCO recognition under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme in 2009 and therefore listed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR).
TCBR which covering an area of 6,922.97 hectares consist of rivers and streams which feed the lake, a slightly steep hill as well as the Tasik Chini State Park Reserve Forest is of appropriate size to serve the conservation, development and logistic support functions. With the barraging of the only river, Sungai Chini, that drains the lake, Tasik Chini is always flooded even during the drier season to encourage ecotourism
The TCBR is known as one of the ecotourism spot in Malaysia due to its diversity of natural species such as Nelumbo nucifera (Indian Lotus), Nymphea lotus (water lily), Lepironia articulate (grey sedge) and Channa micropeltes (giant snakehead fish). There are about 104 endangered tree species, 304 non-aquatic animal species and 144 freshwater fish species in TCBR. There are communities of indigenous people living around the lake areas whom involved in plantation development FELDA and tourism activities. The Jakun tribe use the lake as their source of livelihood and water supply.
