UNESCO IN MALAYSIA

ll

Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) was established by the Government of Malaysia in 1966 under the purview of the Ministry of Education. The secretariat is based at the Policy and International Relations Division (PIRD) in Ministry’s headquarters, Putrajaya.

The National Commission is chaired by the Minister of Education himself. Its members comprise individuals to UNESCO fields of competence in education, science, culture, social sciences and communication. The Under Secretary of the PIRD is also the Secretary General of MNCU, and he is being assisted by an Executive Secretary and 4 Programme Officers.

The MNCU exists in fulfillment of Malaysia’s obligation as a member state of UNESCO for the purpose of:

  • Constituting the main channel of co-operation between UNESCO and Malaysian expertise in the areas of its mandate; and
  • Managing Malaysia’s relationship with UNESCO.
