Bernama, Sunday 15th November 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim has been elected as the president of Unesco’ Intergovernmental Council of The Management of Social Transformation Programme (MOST IGC) Paris.

According to the ministry’s statement here yesterday, Rohani is taking over from Argentina’s Minister of Social Development Dr Alice Kirchner and she will helm the MOST Intergovernmental Council (IGC) for the period 2015 – 2017.

MOST, which was launched in 1994, is the only Unesco programme that fosters and promotes social science research to be used by policy-makers globally. It  is composed of 35 Member States of Unesco including China, Turkey, Brazil, Canada and Indonesia.

Rohani in her speech to address the IGC in Paris after winning the post, said she acknowledged the honour and trust given to her by the other members and that she would continue to strengthen the social and human sciences work MOST has done to support the member states more effectively for the design and implementation of public policies.

“MOST has a valuable and distinctive role to play in social science and humanities research, acting as facilitator for co-operation and mobilisation of capacities, a forum for debate, and a reference point for policy-oriented considerations,” she was quoted as saying in the statement.
